Printing on the Golding

Last Friday we printed a small edition of our broadside on the Golding. We discovered the obvious: practice makes perfect. We still have a lot to learn about makeready.

Note on the type: This is monotype and foundry Baskerville in various sizes. Our 24 pt. has old-style figures, the 30 pt. has lining figures.

Sometimes the letter 'S' is not your friend

Sometimes the letter 'S' is not your friend. But, sometimes your friend can scan away your mistakes.

I thought I'd humor you, Miz Vista.

Golding Tympan Illustration 2

In response to Miz Vista's commentary about not needing the side tabs, I have re-worked the illustration and eliminated those tabs. These changes make tympan cutting much easier.

This is the website for designing your own font. Enjoy! http://fontstruct.fontshop.com/

Today: printing. Next week: Two Rivers field trip

Hello printers,
I've added a link to the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum (under resources on the right) so you can review where we're headed next Friday. I'll go over details this afternoon when we're together. Our host at Hamilton is Greg Corrigan. He'll give us a formal tour when we arrive, and the Silver Buckle has arranged (with kind thanks to the Friends of the UW-Madison Libraries grant program) for the studio fee, so we will be able to set some type and print. I'm hoping we'll have time to set type and proof Friday, and then edition and clean up Saturday before leaving in the mid-afternoon. The plan is to complete a broadside that's already in progress here in Madison. It will be the 2008 issue of our annual "Summer" broadside; we'll post a picture when it's done. And we'll note that it was printed by seminar participants at Hamilton as a commemorative.

Before next week, please also look at some online info on Rob Roy Kelly. Here's a start: http://www.rit.edu/~rkelly/html/index2.html

I look forward to seeing you this afternoon.

Raccoons Can't Load Photos Properly

Both the photos from last week, and these from last week
should be many more...Maybe Kath can show me what I
am doing wrong. There are lots more to share. Raccoons do
better with crayfish than with Picasa.

Shall we blog? Tutorial tomorrow.

Thanks, Red Racoon. I look forward to seeing more.

We'll have a blog session first thing tomorrow so we can all catch up with picture posting, resource additions, etc. I'm working on the schedule and weekly agenda, and would like to try adding a link to those files during our lesson tomorrow.

Loving the chocolate type!

(btw, Slug Eater's birthday is today.)

Slug Eater - Defined (and oh-so-refined)

In response to Miz Vista's yearning for an explanation of my name, Slug Eater, I offer this:
1. Eater of Slugs

Better yet, I'll define slug:
1. The variety of non-printing-related terms describing a snail-like creature, a bullet, a punch, etc.
2. Thick pieces of type metal, like leads, used in spacing, but may also be made of brass (This definition is more thoroughly explained in the American Dictionary of Printing and Bookmaking, which was Republished by Gale Research Company, Book Tower, Detroit, 1967. The ADoPaB is at the press should you care to entertain yourselves!)

(Picture of leading, I usually refer to the 6-point thick leads as slugs)

New feature - Resources column

Please add interesting sites you find to this list. I don't know yet how to organize it by categories, but I bet someone will figure it out.

Miscellany & Hat Returned

I'm enjoying the blog traffic. Thank you Slug Eater for getting this going. (Could you explain your name to us?)

Here's a link to Briar Press--a good site for all things letterpress: http://www.briarpress.org/

Did you know that "Elizabeth" is the name of a typeface designed by Elizabeth Friedlander?

Cheers.

Found: 1 Hat

A light sage colored hat was left here at the press on Friday. It will be here this Friday unless you need to pick it up beforehand.
